2011 Honda Pilot 4WD Touring

The family Crossover Utility Vehicle segment is, to put it mildly, crowded. Every major automaker has at least one option from which to choose. Ford has four choices, while Toyota makes due with three options. Some models feature two rows of seating, while others boast room for up to eight. Then there are the more off-road capable options to contrast with the docile soft-roaders.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

There's something to be said for being at the right place at the right time. Had our primordial ancestors evolved legs and lungs while the entire globe was still awash in warm sea water, they would have gone belly up and we might have never made it to the top of the food chain. At this point in history, our entire species can thank generations of ancestors for not being squished, drowned, beaten, eaten or stabbed before cranking out offspring that would further the human race. One misstep to the left could have been all it took to eradicate entire lines of Homo sapiens progress.

2011 Kia Sportage SX

There's no replacement for displacement. Ask any man or woman who dined on the muscle cars that Detroit was serving in the '50s and '60s, and they'll tell you to always order the largest engine offered if you want to have any fun. Thing is, that tired old axiom just isn't accurate in the modern era. Downsizing is what's for dinner these days.

2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X

There was a time when body-on-frame SUVs dominated American roads, with nearly every major automaker offering some kind of four-wheeling fighter to suburbia's off-road pretenders. Nissan was no different, and at its peak in 2000, the eminently capable Xterra sold some 88,000 copies – the same year our colleagues at Motor Trend crowned it Sport Utility of the Year.

Toyota RAV4 EV

Ahh, the joys of driving a prototype vehicle. During the annual Toyota Sustainable Mobility Seminar in San Diego, California this week, Toyota brought in a handful of all-electric RAV4 EVs for us to tool around in, but there were some caveats: The route was decidedly highway-free; when it rained one afternoon, we were told it would be better to wait to drive the cars; and one journalist had a problem with his vehicle that made it sluggish. The biggest asterisk in the whole program, though, was that the RAV4 EVs we were testing are only a pale shadow of what the real RAV4 EVs will be like when Toyota releases them in the first quarter of 2012.

2011 Kia Optima EX Specs Rebates Suspension Top Speed Color Price Features and Review

2011 Kia Optima EX
2011 Kia Optima EX - Click above for high-res image gallery

Nobody remembers the 2010 Kia Optima, but just like that, the 2011 model may be the mainstream sedan to beat. While some consumers – the uninformed and brand-bigoted – might remain skeptical, the 2011 Kia Optima is the new benchmark. How could the Optima go from warmed-over also-ran to the segment's latest front-runner?

The 2011 Kia Optima is at once classy and striking. There's just enough detailing to keep it interesting without looking gaudy. Kia sent us an Optima EX with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome accents on the door handles, body color mirrors and chrome exhaust tips added to the crisp bodywork. The windshield header's echo of the "tabbed" grille is the designer's way of saying "Hey, we thought about this." Clean and inoffensive, there's virtually nothing to criticize about the 2011 Optima's styling.

The nuts and bolts of body assembly appear carefully attended to with tight panel gaps and good fit and finish all around. A stretched-out, long-wheelbase look underscores the increased size over the old Optima, and passenger volume is boosted to 102 cubic feet, near the top of its class. A 15.4-cubic-foot trunk is also larger than several of the Optima's peers.

2011 Kia Optima EX side view2011 Kia Optima EX front view2011 Kia Optima EX rear view

On the inside, there's not as much flair as the outside, perhaps, but the dashboard has a whiff of Saab-ness to it. French stitching, the latest way to say "I'm upscale!" appears on the padded material ringing the instrument panel and center stack. The EX trim level we tested carried the $2,000 Technology Package, which also rolls in the $2,500 Premium Package. All of this translates to a panoramic moonroof and heated and cooled power-adjustable front seats with memory for the driver's side and heated rear seats. A metal bezel around the shifter and wood trim on the center console and door panels is there to reinforce the message of fancy tailoring. Materials, design and quality are as good or better than anyone else. You'll have to step up to a luxury brand to find anything better.

Knobs and stalks also feel tight and precise. The big LCD screen, automobiledom's equivalent of the ostentatious flat screen, is clear and easy to use, but we found it too bright for night driving, even at its minimum illumination setting. Fortunately, the screen is easily switched off to minimize nighttime distraction. We did occasionally hunt for buttons, and even though Bluetooth is standard, there's no voice command system for anything other than paired phones. Uvo, developed with Microsoft, does offer some voice recognition control and communication and device integration, but it's rolling out gradually and not offered on Optimas that have navigation like our EX.

2011 Kia Optima EX interior2011 Kia Optima EX front seats2011 Kia Optima EX navigation system2011 Kia Optima EX engine

The Optima is a mainstream sedan, so ease-of-use is a priority. The chunky leather-wrapped steering wheel is sporty-feeling, even if the electrically-assisted rack and pinion is too light and not much of a talker. With a roomy cabin, the Optima is comfortable front and rear, though the class-leading 44.5 inches of front leg room comes at the expense of rear legroom – at just 34.6 inches, it's about three inches shy of its segment peers. Rear seat passengers are also shortchanged on shoulder room relative to the rest of the class, though rear headroom isn't bitten by the raked C pillar like you might expect.

Kia says the 2011 Optima rides on an all-new platform. That's true, and the underpinnings were co-developed with the all-new Hyundai Sonata. The Optima's suspension is firmer, giving sharp responses at the expense of some ride comfort. Kia's modus operandi of stiffly tuned standard suspensions makes even the basic 2011 Optima stern enough over bumps. It's more supple than some of its overly-harsh siblings that bounce and clunk over bad pavement, capable of tight body control and impact absorption. The multi-link rear and MacPherson strut front setups allow the Optima to corner with discipline. Brakes are firm and easily modulated, as well. The bottom line for drivers is that the 2011 Optima follows orders eagerly and can actually be fun to drive.

2011 Kia Optima EX rear 3/4 view2011 Kia Optima EX headlight2011 Kia Optima EX side trim2011 Kia Optima EX wheel

The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that our EX carried is among the smoothest engines of its type. Its 200 horsepower is made possible by direct injection that also boosts efficiency. A six-speed manual transmission is available in the entry Optima LX trim and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine can also be had, but not together. Optional turbo aside, the 2.4-liter's no slouch on its own. Teamed with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic, this powertrain is quiet and refined, capable of great fuel economy. The EPA estimates you'll get 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. We scored a solid 27 combined.

Perhaps it's not much of a surprise that the newest mainstream sedan appears to trump all the established players. After all, competitors like the Nissan Altima, Toyota's evergreen Camry, Ford's lauded Fusion and the Chevrolet Malibu that debuted to much fanfare are all years-old veterans by now. Refreshes are coming and this battle will wear on. Soon, we'll know if the 2011 Kia Optima is forged from the right stuff to continue proving the company's "The Power to Surprise" tagline. For the moment, it's got what it takes, but our advice would be to not rest on its newfound success. It's brutal out there.

More Power, Less Fuel
The 2012 Soul will amplify the fun-to-drive factor with significant horsepower and fuel economy increases with new six-speed transmissions and the ability to deliver up to 34 miles per gallon on the highway. A new 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission produces 135 horsepower (an 11 percent increase in horsepower from the previous engine) and 121 pound-feet of torque. For those looking for a boost in power, a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is available with either the six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The latter engine produces 160 horsepower (a 13 percent increase in horsepower from the previous engine) and 143 pound-feet of torque, and is standard on Soul+, Soul! and Soul sport models. Fuel economy for the 1.6-liter comes in at an impressive 28/34 mpg1(city/highway), three miles per gallon more than the previous engine while the 2.0-liter offers a fuel-sipping 27/33 mpg for both the automatic and manual transmissions2.

New and modern LED rear light clusters enhance the Soul's unique design while the overall shape of the vehicle was finessed to give Soul a smoother and more streamlined silhouette. New for 2012, Soul buyers can choose from two new, exotic exterior paint colors – Canyon and Moss – that complement a wide palette of existing colors. Unique Platform/Chassis
Soul is different, right down to its platform. With its own distinguished style, Soul features front-wheel drive, a high roofline and a wide, distinctive stance. Built with a wheelbase of 100.4 inches, an overall length of 161.6 inches, an overall width of 70.3 inches and overall height of 63.4 inches, the Soul offers a comfortable interior with roomy seating for up to five passengers. Constructed with more than 70 percent high-tensile-strength steel to enhance structural strength without adding a lot of weight, the Kia-engineered body achieves high torsional stiffness, benefiting handling, ride quality and refinement.
Additional measures to help ensure good noise vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction qualities also are fitted throughout the Soul, including a thicker dash insulation panel, an A-pillar noise-absorber pad and an optimized exhaust silencer, a vibration-damper, a center floor anti-vibration pad, and vinyl sealing on door trim. All Soul+, Soul! and Soul sport trims also receive an added sub-frame dynamic damper and a heavy engine support dynamic damper, which help lessen transfer of NVH into the cabin.
Soul features a fully independent, sub-frame mounted front suspension system with MacPherson struts, coil springs, rear monotube gas shock absorbers and stabilizer bar designed to maximize the friction between the tires and the road, providing steering stability with responsive handling to offer passengers optimal comfort. At the rear, Soul's suspension is sub-frame mounted with a transverse torsion beam axle with trailing arms, coil springs and gas shock absorbers for a smooth ride and minimum intrusion into the cargo space. Soul sport models feature a sport-tuned suspension that includes firmer springs, re-tuned shock absorbers and a larger front stabilizer bar resulting in a lively, more energetic ride.

2012 Kia Rio Specs Suspension Top Speed Rebates Color Price Features and Review

Motor Show and shown today for the first time in North America – the all-new Rio ushers in the next chapter of Kia Motors' ongoing design-led transformation with previously unseen levels of eye-catching design, advanced technologies and sophistication in the small car segment.

With all-new ISG technology and class-leading horsepower and fuel economy of 40 miles per gallon2, Rio promises consumers impressive fuel efficiency without sacrificing power or fun-to-drive performance.

"The all-new Rio brings Kia's successful combination of world-class styling, outstanding fuel economy, advanced technologies and tremendous value to the smallest and most economical vehicle in the Kia lineup," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "With gas prices rising, sub-compacts are becoming increasingly more popular and with more power, up to 40 miles per gallon fuel economy and stunning design, the all-new Rio sets the standard in the sub-compact class and becomes a vehicle that is not only affordable, but one that people will aspire to own."

Class-Leading Fuel-Efficiency and Horsepower
Available in three trims – LX, EX and SX – the 2012 Rio is available with a 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder with the option of either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic. One of only two vehicles in the segment to offer a GDI engine, the 2012 Rio offers consumers an elusive combination of power and impressive fuel efficiency, achieving class-leading3 138 horsepower while also maintaining a class-leading fuel economy rating of 30/40 mpg (city/highway)4. Rio also offers ISG technology, new to the Kia lineup, where the engine turns off when the vehicle is not in motion such as at a stop light or in traffic. The engine restarts automatically when the driver releases the brake pedal, resulting in lower levels of fuel consumption.
Adding further to Rio's improved performance, engineers worked to reduce engine weight by 29 pounds over the previous generation by adding an aluminum valve cover and block to the third-generation Gamma engine, while incorporating cast iron lining for increased durability.

Sleek and Streamlined Exterior
Conceived at Kia's design studios in Irvine, Calif., the all-new Rio sub-compact sedan and hatchback exhibit highly sculpted sloping shoulder lines and wedge-shaped exteriors, projecting an athletic profile that conveys power and agility while mimicking the aggressive lines found on other recently launched Kia vehicles such as the 2011 Optima and Sportage. Both Rio models sport their own interpretations of Kia's signature grille, slimmed down to connect to the dynamic headlamp design, providing a new twist on the Kia family look that includes a bigger air intake to exude a youthful persona. The Rio sedan shares the sleek skin of its hatchback sibling, only dropping the wedge line slightly toward the rear door down to the trunk.
The LX trim includes body-color door handles and side mirrors and 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65R15 tires, while the Rio5 also comes with a standard rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics. To accentuate a premium look, the side mirrors are attached to the door rather than the plastic triangle like so many others in the segment. Moving to the EX trim brings additional standard conveniences, including power door locks with keyless entry and a standard rear wiper for the Rio5. For consumers looking for higher levels of sporty refinement, the SX trim offers standard 17-inch wheels with 205/45R17 tires, fog lamps, LED daytime running and rear combinations lamps, dual chrome tip exhaust, outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators and, unique for the Rio5, projector headlamps.

Luxuriously Equipped Interior
Moving inside, the 2012 Rio envelopes driver and passengers in a bold and modern cabin, centered on Kia's characteristic horizontal three-cylinder instrument panel, two-tone for the 2012 Rio to emphasize a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. An extended wheelbase (101.2 inches) greatly enhances passenger and cargo capacity for additional comfort, offering 40 inches front headroom, 37.8 inches rear headroom, 43.3 inches front legroom and 31.1 inches rear legroom for the Rio sedan and Rio5 hatchback.
Standard on the LX trim is a driver's seat height adjuster, while moving to the EX trim includes standard power windows with automatic up/down on the driver's window, Bluetooth®5 wireless technology connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable hands-free operation for compatible mobile phones, telescoping steering column, 60/40 split folding rear seats and leatherette door trim. The SX trim offers consumers an even more upscale look and feel with standard metal pedals, metal grain, a Supervision™ meter cluster, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, maplight with sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, trip computer, cruise control, UVO powered by Microsoft®6 in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display, and chrome-coated accents throughout.

In addition to offering a comfortable cabin, impressive technology features also come standard throughout, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities and three months complimentary service7 and auxiliary and USB audio input jacks for connecting with MP3 players.
Available packaging upgrades for the Rio EX include a Convenience Package and Eco Package, while the SX level offers an available Premium Package. The Convenience Package includes 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic light control, fog lamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, maplight with sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators, trip computer, cruise control and the UVO powered by Microsoft® in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display8 . The Eco Package appeals to the environmentally friendly consumer with ISG technology and an Active Eco System for optimal fuel-efficient driving. Upgrading the SX trim with the luxurious Premium Package includes a navigation system (replaces the UVO system), push-button start with Smart Key, leather seat trim, heated front seats and a moonroof to give an open, airy feeling.

All-New Advanced Platform
The 2012 Rio brings with it an all-new platform – longer, wider and lower than the previous generation. Its aggressive and playful stance is assisted through an overall length of 171.9 (Rio sedan) or 159.3 (Rio5) with a platform measuring 67.7 inches wide and 57.3 inches high. Employing high-tensile-strength steel (63 percent), Rio's lightweight design offers high torsional stiffness for improved handling, ride quality and refinement. Though a more expensive alternative, using these materials also increases crash safety capabilities while reducing overall weight. To ensure good noise vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction, the 2012 Rio was outfitted with hood and dash insulators as well as expandable foam in the A and C pillars and Thinsulate™ in the A and B pillars.
Built on a unibody frame, the front-wheel-drive Rio utilizes independent front and rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts, coil springs and a stabilizer bar are used in the front with a torsion beam axle suspension in the rear to engage drivers with responsive handling and provide the utmost comfort for a variety of driving situations.

2011 Kia Rondo EX-V6 Specification Suspension Rebates Color Price Top Speed and Review

Many of you reading this review are no more interested in cars or buying one than you are looking forward to your next papercut. But if you're here, you probably need one and are wisely searching for pertinent info. We auto peeps sometimes forget to keep things basic as we eat, sleep and breathe cars. In fact, a world without them would have many of us sharing a box in Vancouver's downtown east side.

I will dispense with driving dynamics, acceleration and horsepower numbers and steering input and feedback and stick to what's really important for this vehicle.

For those looking for a good, safe and basic form of family transportation, you've come to the right place. The Kia Rondo may have all the answers to your requirements. In fact, the Rondo is one of the best rounded vehicles on the road today.

Let's begin with: Can it hold all your stuff and your clan? In short, the answer is yes unless you're Octomom. The Rondo's boot is capacious, offering up a volume of 898 litres behind the second row. When lowered, that number increases to 2,083 litres. That's big.

As tested, my EX was a 5-seater. A 7-seater version is available, however when in place, the 3rd row leaves only 185 litres of cargo space. This and a fairly tight bench for most human beings make the optional rearmost bench a questionable choice. If you need more room, consider a Sorento or a Sedona.

Will you and your crew be comfortable in the Rondo? Yes. Over the years, the Koreans have bettered their seats as well as the driving position. Although the steering column will not telescope, the final setup is better than decent. The second-row 60/40-split folding bench will please with generous leg and shoulder room. Three kids under 10 should sit quietly enough for at least 8 or 9 minutes...

Next, how bad is it on gas? Not that bad. My V6-equipped Rondo has some pickup and go, but unless you need to tow something over 1,500 lbs (681 kg), stick with the base 2.4L 4-cylinder engine. I averaged nearly 11 L/100 km on my week-long test. If you're not always in a rush to get where you need to be, the 4-pot should trim about 1 L/100 km off your average.

2011 Kia Sportage EX Luxury Specification Rebates Suspension Top Speed Color Price and Review

Whether you’ve noticed it or not, Korean automaker Kia has definitely hit its stride. And the company, whose sales skyrocketed by over 27% last year, shows no signs of slowing down either. The impetus behind this ascension is the quality of its products, more than ever equal to the expectations of Canadian consumers.

And when we talk about successful products, we can’t help but mention the Kia Sportage. The diminutive SUV, the previous generations of which were more famous for their ad campaigns than their actual capabilities, has evolved so thoroughly that it’s now at the heart of Kia’s success story.

Thank you Mr Schreyer
I know, I know, virtually every article you read about Kia’s products mentions, in one way or another, Peter Schreyer. We are hard-pressed indeed not to emphasize the quality of the designer’s work. Schreyer has literally revolutionized the design language spoken by Kia.

He started redefining Kia with the Soul, and continued his mission with another noteworthy success: the Sportage. Traditionally, all sport utility vehicles have a bit of a common, bland look to them from the outside.

Not so for the Sportage, though. Schreyer has imbued its lines with vitality. In concrete terms, the Kia Sportage is like nothing else in its class (other than its close cousin, the Hyundai Tucson). The mix of curves and sharp crests create an assertive stance when stopped and an impression of speed every time it moves.

The front and rear lights are also uniquely shaped and blend in beautifully with the body for a consistent, contemporary and refined look. In other words, this Sportage could easily pass for a small luxury SUV.

The cabin obviously got the same meticulous treatment. The dials are at the heart of things, easy to see and read. The controls on the centre console are ergonomic, and the whole package has a distinctly more contemporary feel to it. And it must be said, rejuvenating SUV dashboards is no small task.

2011 Kia Sportage SX Specs Rebates Suspension Top Speed Price Color News Features and Review

2011 Kia Sportage SX - front three-quarter

There's no replacement for displacement. Ask any man or woman who dined on the muscle cars that Detroit was serving in the '50s and '60s, and they'll tell you to always order the largest engine offered if you want to have any fun. Thing is, that tired old axiom just isn't accurate in the modern era. Downsizing is what's for dinner these days.

Before anyone older than 60 has a heart attack, know that the ever-escalating horsepower wars are alive and well. As it turns out, there is a replacement for displacement: technology. Take one part modern computers and the hundreds of sensors that feed them, add the classic trick of turbocharging and sprinkle on the relatively newfangled mechanical magic of direct injection, and you've got yourself one tasty recipe for performance. And you don't need a cup that measures power in cubic inches to get it.

Look no farther for proof than Kia. The Korean automaker is working hard to change its hard-earned image of offering low-cost, basic transportation to something more like the sportier side of a dual-headed Korean conglomerate that also includes Hyundai. Its SX trim level is part of that plan, and the latest two vehicles to bear those letters only have a less-is-more strategy of power production on the menu. We've already sampled the turbocharged, direct-injected Optima SX and were left wanting seconds; now it's time to taste Kia's well-received and attractive compact crossover, the Sportage, in turbo flavor.

Make no mistake, the biggest piece of the Sportage SX pie is its engine. Kia has managed to coax 260 horsepower (at 6,000 rpm) from just 2.0 liters, which is an impressive feat. Torque comes in at an equally impressive 269 pound-feet, delivered between 1,850 and 3,000 rpm. If that's not sounding all that special, consider what would happen if you could linearly double the engine size and output. Does 520 horsepower from 4.0 liters grab your attention?

Granted, other automakers have met and even beaten that power-per-liter figure – General Motors reached that exact same level of horsepower with its turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0-liter Ecotec engine over five years ago, albeit with a bit less peak torque. Kia, however, has managed the feat while requiring only regular-grade gasoline. We applaud Kia for not requiring the finest of fuel (in terms of price) at the pump, even more so because we're not being asked to forsake any performance at the altar of 87 octane.

2011 Kia Sportage SX side view

We did ask officials on hand at the model's introduction in Phoenix if there would be a performance boost from using premium gasoline, but there isn't. We were told this engine was tuned from the very beginning to drink regular 87 octane, and while its computer system will indeed recognize when higher octane gas goes in the tank, the entire system has been optimized for regular. In other words, fill the tank with 87 octane and be thankful you don't have to pay extra for the privilege of having 260 horses underhood.

What's more, the fuel economy penalty for all this extra power (the larger displacement standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder offers just 176 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque) isn't all that severe. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Sportage SX will return 22 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway in front-wheel-drive guise, and 21/25 equipped with all-wheel drive. Those figures equal the standard Sportage in the city, though owners will lose three to four mpg on the highway from the horsepower injection.

2011 Kia Sportage SX engine

It's also worth mentioning that the 2011 Kia Sportage SX shares its basic drivetrain with the Optima SX, which produces 274 horsepower. Why the output discrepancy? Kia explains that packaging issues in the Sportage required revised intake and exhaust routing, which in turn required slightly different tuning. Those changes resulted in a loss of 14 horsepower compared to the Optima, but peak torque remains the same.

Those ponies are routed to the front wheels (all-wheel drive is optional) through a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode, but no steering wheel paddles (there is a +/- detent on the gearlever, however). We'd argue that any performance-minded machine should have paddle-shifters if no proper manual transmission is made available, but such arguments often fall on deaf ears at automakers that say they have solid business cases in hand saying otherwise. In any case, the six-speed automatic in the Sportage SX handles shifting duties well, though we predictably prefer snappier gear changes when driving aggressively, or better yet, a dedicated Sport mode.

2011 Kia Sportage SX interior

Which brings us to our only real complaint about the drivetrain. As is typical with small displacement turbocharged engines, power doesn't begin to build until the twin-scroll turbocharger starts turning. It's laudable that peak torque comes on at just 1,850 rpm, but there's noticeable lag below that. From a dead stop, the torque converter does a good job of getting the boosted engine into its sweet spot, but if the Sportage SX is moving at anything below a walking pace, even adding some spice in its sauce won't generate any meaningful acceleration for a beat or two. That's certainly not a deal breaker, as such instances of sudden onset acceleration don't happen all that often in the real world, but it's something to keep in mind if you think those 260 horses are ready to run at all times.

Once moving, the 2.0-liter engine feels very responsive and that broad torque spread allows it to haul the stylish little crossover into passing speed with nothing but a single downshift. Braking performance is similarly immediate, as the 11.8-inch ventilated front discs (up an eighth of an inch over non-turbocharged models) offer good initial bite and have plenty of reserve power for emergency situations. Steering manners are generally pleasant, though the feel and feedback from the electronic rack still doesn't match that of a well-tuned hydraulic unit. That said, we were accustomed to this artificial feeling from the front wheels after the first few miles and never really thought about it again.

2011 Kia Sportage SX rear 3/4 view

The Sportage SX also has a suspension tuned on the sporty side of the compact crossover segment. As observed over largely smooth Arizona roads, we wouldn't describe the ride as harsh, but it's firmly on the side of... firm, the benefit of which is well-controlled body roll. Interestingly, all-wheel-drive models also feature a lockable center differential, but that doesn't mean you should expect any real off-road capabilities. We happened to have a Trail Rated 2011 Jeep Patriot the same week we were testing the Sportage SX. Suffice it to say that the Sportage would not be Trail Rated were it wearing a Jeep badge. Not that it matters much – we can't imagine any Sportage SX buyer taking this turbocharged machine farther off the road than the rutted dirt parking lot at the local farmer's market. And if called for, the optional all-wheel-drive system will do a fine job of adding some security in bad weather conditions.

Naturally, you will have to empty your piggy banks a bit more than the standard Sportage to drive home in a turbocharged SX. Base price for the front-wheel-drive SX is $25,795. All-wheel drive will cost you an extra $1,500. That may seem a bit expensive when compared to the $18,295 asking price for a base Sportage, but the SX is loaded up with all the same goodies as the upper-level EX trim, and the turbo engine option with all its assorted performance goodies adds a somewhat more reasonable $2,500 to the cost of an EX.

The 2011 Kia Sportage SX rides, drives and generally behaves exactly like what it is: a Sportage with a welcome dash of horsepower. If you like the basic entree Kia offers in its compact 'ute but crave an optional V6 engine, you'll find a delicious substitute in the turbocharged, direct-injected 2.0-liter under its sculpted hood.

2011 Kia Optima EX Specs Rebates Suspension Top Speed Price Color News and Review

2011 Kia Optima EX
