Fore Flags, Red Flags – the 2011 Volvo C70 Convertible

When convertibles first dashed en masse towards power retractable hardtops, the Volvo C70 proudly led the throng, waving its flag at the forefront. A decade or two later, Volvo is still whipping its banner. If you search for a two-door entry-level luxury sport convertible with a power retractable hardtop, the Volvo C70 is your X. But we must raise our own flag. Should you not need such a vehicle, look elsewhere, because other cars offer more performance, more panache and more features for a more attractive price.
Wait, did we call the Volvo C70 “sporty”? That was a slip of the tongue. Compared to its competition, the Volvo is decidedly dull, with lackluster cornering, mediocre acceleration and dreary handling. Its turbocharged five-cylinder engine does little to motivate the C70 to accomplish any athletic achievements. Now, to be fair, the 2011 Volvo C70 is not weak or sloppy, just undeserving of a “sport convertible” moniker. But if you approach the convertible with no previous expectations of performance, the C70’s comfortable, soft and quiet ride will delight you. Note the word, “quiet”? That is a rare adjective for a convertible, but the C70 earns it.
Like its predecessors and peers from the Swedish automaker, the C70 boasts stellar safety scores. The IIHS awarded the redesigned 2011 C70 with a perfect ballot for crash tests and for its capacity to prevent whiplash injuries. Notable features include full-length side-curtain airbags, rollover hoops, passenger airbag occupant-sensing deactivation, and child-safety features like booster seat anchors and an interior trunk release.
The C70’s interior marries its greatest weakness with its supreme strength. For $40,000, the C70 has an unacceptable amount of standard features. However, the C70 has the most comfortable, practical and stylish interior of its direct competitors. The seats are supportive and cozy, the controls are well-designed, the cabin is abnormally spacious, the craftsmanship is excellent, and everything brims with that Swedish sense of simple, unsoiled styling.
