Not About You – the 2011 Porsche Boxster
Most cars obsequiously bow and gush, “Look at what I can do for you!” The 2011 Porsche Boxster stands square-shouldered and merely says, “Look at what I can do.”No one buys the Boxster because it is comfortable – it’s not. No one buys the Boxster because it is practical – it isn’t. The Boxster is about freedom, and speed, short throws and flat cornering. If you want a car to keep you stress-free and cozy, stop reading. But if you want excitement, you won’t be able to.
Ease to the stop. Drop the power retractable roof to feel the wind. Tap the brake and sense the surge of power from the massive ventilated disc brakes, aided by electronic brake assist and a precharged braking system. Then begin. Stomp on the gas pedal and listen to the energetic scream from the “boxer” six-cylinder engine. The rear wheels send the roadster screeching forwards, planted firmly on the ground with Porsche’s Active Stability Management system. 60 mph arrives in a quick 5.3 seconds, and triple digits arrive soon thereafter, but the 2,943-lb Boxster remains supremely confident, resting on an immensely capable suspension. You have just been exposed to the Boxster experience. Beware, it’s like a drug, and you may become an addict with just one exposure.
Were the Boxster’s interior to appear in a mainstream sedan, it would be immediately ostracized and abolished. It is plain and unadorned, with little color or style, and seats only two in acceptable roominess. It packs survival necessities – air conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories and a four-speaker stereo system – plus a few more goodies, such as leather upholstery and power adjustable seats. As evidenced by the absence of accoutrements, performance takes precedence over practicality. If you require more comfort, the options roster will more than suffice.
The 2011 Porsche Boxster is not about you; it’s about driving.
