Five Liters – the 2011 Ford Mustang GT Coupe
Five liters. That’s all we’re saying; that’s all that needs to be said. Safety statistics and retro styling, however commendable, pale in the face of such displacement. The 2011 Mustang GT coupe receives an all-new 5.0-liter V8 engine, a masterpiece of engineering and imagination, and that makes this pony car the undisputed champion of the drag strip.As Mustang enthusiasts everywhere will say, the heart of the Pony is the engine. New for 2011 is a small block V8 cranking out a massive 412 horsepower, fully available at 6,500 rpms under a 7,000 rpm redline. All 390 lb-ft of torque are available at 4,250 rpms, with a similarly linear torque band. New dual overhead cams and variable valve timing increase power, while new aluminum and composite construction decreases weight. The new “Coyote” 5.0-liter V8 is one of the best V8s available, and it wins the Mustang GT a gold medal.
The Mustang GT coupe wins another gold one for handling, but it comes with less aplomb. With the lowest power-to-weight ratio in the class, the 2011 Mustang handles corners admirably, and its steering is acceptably communicative. However, the Ford does lack some finesse. Its live rear axle is finely engineered, but it falls short of a good multi-point independent rear suspension. This adds some unnecessary rigidity to the ‘Stang’s ride.
In keeping with customary muscle car decorum, the Mustang GT has a somewhat Spartan interior. Vice or virtue, we’re not sure. We appreciate the austerity in the interest of history, but wish our $30,000 garnered a few more creature comforts. Beyond survival necessities, MyKey and a few power knickknacks, the Mustang GT is bare. But for all its asceticism, the Mustang GT has a comfortable, somewhat roomy interior with a usable two-passenger rear seat and trunk. Luxurious, no – livable, yes.
