Steering Wheels Dirtier Than Toilets | Carz Passion News

As we enter our collective lunch breaks, we thought this number might make you think again before eating and driving: There are nearly nine times as many potentially harmful bugs on your steering wheel as there are on an average toilet seat.
Yeah, that’s right — gross. That pleasant fact comes from researchers at Queen Mary University in London. Overall, there are about 700 bacteria per square inch on a steering wheel, compared with 80 bacteria over the same area on a toilet seat. Most of the micro-organisms aren’t harmful to humans, but there are some, such as Bacillus cereus, which can cause foodborne illnesses when digested. I guess that wouldn’t be a problem if you washed your hands before eating, but according to the study, 42% of drivers regularly eat in their cars while driving.
Adding insult to injury: Only 33% of drivers clean the inside of their cars at least once a year, and about 10% of car owners have never cleaned the interior of their vehicles, the study says.
Regularly cleaning the interior of your vehicle will help avoid potential health risks from bacteria, the researchers said. Ughh.

Police: Lowa Teen Killed in Crash After Fuel Theft ‎

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Police say a 16-year-old Iowa boy has died in a crash after another teen fueled up the car they were in and fled without paying.

Sixteen-year-old Brice Nelson of the central Iowa town of Nevada died at the scene early Saturday in Ames. Hospital officials say another passenger, a 14-year-old girl, is in critical condition.

The 18-year-old driver, Kaleb Hoversten of Ames, faces vehicular homicide, theft and driving with a suspended license charges. He's jailed on $50,000 bond. No attorney is listed for him.

Police say Hoversten pumped about $53 in gas at a convenience store and drove off without paying. When an officer tried stopping the car, police say the teen sped off and collided with an SUV. The condition of the man driving that vehicle is not clear.

David Beckham Involved in Car Crash But Escapes Uninjured ‎

David Beckham has been involved in a car accident on one of the busiest roads in Los Angeles.
The LA Galaxy star was not injured in the crash on the southbound 405 Freeway, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said. The driver of the other car was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.
Beckham's black Cadillac crashed into the back of a gold Mitsubishi which had broken down in the carpool lane.
"Yesterday at approximately 9.13am he [Beckham] was involved with a collision on the southbound 405 Freeway just south of Artesia Boulevard," said the spokeswoman.
"This collision occurred when his black Cadillac collided with the rear of a disabled gold Mitsubishi which was stalled in the carpool lane due to mechanical problems. The driver of the vehicle had a complaint of pain and was taken to hospital. David Beckham was not cited or arrested."

Vitz and Platz Rules Pakistani Roads

Toyota developed Vitz (aka Yaris) & Platz (aka Echo) initially for sale/use in European & Japanese markets. However, just because they are cheaper (to buy) many of my local brethren have fallen ‘prey’ to dubious dealers selling Vitz & Platz (mostly re-conditioned ones) as Japanese assembled “A-Category” automobiles.
During the course of my research I came across an article by an American ex-pat, Heather Carriero currently teaching in Pakistan who has a self-described ‘unquenchable” thirst for travel, adventure & new challenges.




Her article cites the cars’  low clearance, non-compatibility with CNG kits & overall poor quality of fuel in Pakistan as the most daunting problems faced by these foreign-assembled cars.

Porsche’s Prices and Marketing in Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Porsche Pakistan was launched by Autotechnik  Pvt. Ltd. in 2005 with the establishment of Porsche Centre Lahore. Autotechnik is the exclusive importer of Porsche cars in Pakistan.
After changing two locations & opening/closing a service centre the company seems to have shut down its operations temporarily. The reasons purpotedly include a clash between partners & a ‘fall-out’ with the parent company in Germany.
Today the contact numbers given by Autotechnik website are 0425872871 & 042-5872875 while the Porsche International Website (incidentally linked on Porsche Pakistan website gives the same as (Sales) 111-777-911 & (Service) 111-888-911. I’m confused but what is more confusing is that none of them is being attended.
Nevertheless the cars that are being sold are being sold at these proces (as er Porsche-Pakistan.com website:

Suzuki’s APV: What good is this All Purpose Vehicle ?

Suzuki has about 3 years ago started importing APV to supplement (or perhaps replace) its ailing BOLAN Van. The APV however is now being used to give direct competition to Mitsubishi’s L300 & Toyota’s Hiace Commuter Vans as well as being advertised for your ‘entire’ (read joint) family needs. Lets see what the APV is all about!

 Its price (ranging from Rs1.62million to Rs.1.675million) is perhaps its weapon of choice (as with all Suzuki models) with its competing Mitsubishi’s L300 price ranging between Rs.1.999million to Rs.2.349million & the more popular Hiace retailing between Rs.2.499million & Rs.3.199million.

Moreover its smaller overall & engine size makes it more economical & easier to navigate on narrow inner-city roads found in all the major cities of Pakistan. Engine dispalcement of APV is 1493cc compared to L300′s 2477cc & Hiace’s 1593cc.  Overall length of APV is 4.23m much less than L300′s 4.59m (STD) & 4.81m (DX). Although both claim a min. turning radius of 4.9m APV can even part where L300 won’t (even with bumpers removed).
Fuel tank of L300 is slightly bigger 55L compared with APV’s 47L so is the seating capacity (L300:12; APV:8) but the size of fuel tank does not come as an advantage while within the urban areas & in Pakistan seating capacity is hardly what is written in the brochure.
The only thing the car isn’t good for is what it is actually advertised for: accomodating large-joint families because Suzuki’s own BOLAN beats APV in all categories (price, fuel efficiency & mobility) except comfort. But when the whole family travels together who needs comfort; all we need is to get wherever we are going fast to avoid verbal skirmishes.

Police find car they think it was used in Calgary hit-and-run

Police believe they have found the car used during a serious hit and run accident early Friday involving a construction worker.
They suspect the BMW was involved when the worker was struck on Blackfoot Trail under the Ogden road overpass that sent the worker to Foothills Hospital in serious, but stable condition.
The man was rushed to hospital with multiple fractures in his legs and had to undergo surgery.
"Our traffic division worked their magic and did their investigation," said Insp. Rob Williams, adding they are still working on a suspect.
It is believed the car was travelling between 80 to 100 km/h in an area with signage alerting drivers of speed limits of 50 km/h and 60 km/h.
Since then, the police say they have been "swarmed" with tips for sightings of the car.
Williams says citizens are no longer required to report suspected sightings as they are "pretty confident that this is the vehicle."

Ford Mustang Emerges From Tornado Devastation Under Its Own Power - Carz Passion

The death toll from Wednesday's tornadoes has reached a staggering 204 in the state of Alabama alone. The once proud university town of Tuscaloosa, home to the multi-time NCAA National Champion Crimson Tide football team, lies in ruin. For now, there isn't much in the way of inspiring news from the state.

This morning, though, a video hit the web of a Tuscaloosa resident driving his Ford Mustang convertible out of the wreckage. The Mustang is far from a pretty sight, and likely won't be moving anywhere else under its own grunt any time soon, but it's inspiring nonetheless – a small glimmer that not all is lost.

True, a ragged, fifteen-year-old Ford dragging itself from the ruins of a terrible natural disaster isn't exactly the feel-good hit of the summer. True, the car's miraculous survival doesn't serve as a sign that Alabama's return to normal is right around the corner. What it does show, on however small a level, is that there's always hope, no matter how bleak things get.

Buick Sells 3 Millionth Car in China - Carz Passion

China and Buick have enjoyed a fruitful relationship since the brand's introduction there in 1999, and General Motors is now celebrating the sale of the three-millionth Buick in the country. This greatly exceeds Buick sales in the U.S. over that same period, and GM managed to move all that metal with only 400 stores across China.

Shanghai GM credits the Buick brand strategy laid out in 2008 as a reason for the impressive totals, with sales rising by more than 100,000 units per year. That approach has resulted in the introduction of several new or revised Buick models over the past few years, including the GL8 luxury MPV and the Excelle GT and XT.

Colorado Museum is Trove of Shelby American Treasures - Carz Passion

Kamil Kaluski, a.k.a CarGuyDad, was cruising around Boulder, Colorado with his daughter when he spotted a sign emblazoned with "Auto Museum." Not expecting much, he was a surprised to find this particular museum was actually home to the Shelby American Collection.

Stepping into the nondescript building, Kaluski and his young traveling companion were greeted by the sight of Cobras, Mustangs, GT40s and a few other very special hunks of iron. Some of those "other" vehicles include a Falcon wagon used as a Shelby parts hauler/tow vehicle and a Ferrari raced by Carroll himself.

Jay Leno Plays Around With The Cars From Fast Five - Carz Passion

Fast Five is the latest in the reinvigorated Fast and Furious franchise, and while the latest film adds Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (along with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel), the real co-stars are, as always, the cars. A whole new batch of wheels debuts in Fast Five, and Jay Leno took a firsthand look at some of them.

Movie car builder Dennis McCarthy brought a C2 Corvette Grand Sport replica, which features a 1980s Corvette suspension and a custom body by Mongoose. While many movie cars feature "fake" power, the Vette still packs 500 horses. And since this Vette was made for movie production, there are another nine copies, two of which sit on Volkswagen platforms to better handle some off-road stunts.

Beyond the Corvetteette, McCarthy brought a 1960s Dodge Charger with a gutted blower and a small-block Chevy underhood. 100-year-old NASCAR fan tackles the track, lives to see 101

We're not the biggest NASCAR fans in the world, but we can't think of a much better way to celebrate a 100th birthday than with a few laps around New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Rachel Gilbert, a NASCAR follower since the 1960s, took five live laps around the speedway in a Toyota Camry pace car. Ms. Gilbert, we salute you.

The great grandmother of nine never passed 50 miles per hour, but she seemed pretty darn pleased with her shot at NASCAR glory. The good people at the speedway also gave Gilbert VIP tickets to the July Spring Cup and a shirt signed by Carl Edwards.

State Farm's feedback app is the pocket-seat driver you never wanted

Somewhere deep in the recesses of your mind is the desire, surely Freudian, that "I'd like more input and feedback on how I drive, even to the grocery store." Or, at least, State Farm believes that's how some of you feel since it has just released a Driver Feedback app for the iPhone that will give you just that.

Invoking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, State Farm says, "Three of the riskiest driving behaviors are hard acceleration, hard deceleration, and hard swerves." Using the iPhone's GPS and accelerometer the app will keep track of the trip and how hard or soft your acceleration, braking and cornering and then issues a score for each category. The complete game-ification of safe driving means that you can also compare your trips and scores, and share with others.

We aren't sure what the criteria are for measuring Light vs. Moderate vs. Severe actions, but if anyone must know it's State Farm... right? If you need more convincing, check out the short video after the jump.

Prince William borrows father's vintage Aston Martin for Royal Wedding cruise

 

Kings and princes aren't generally in the business of driving themselves... well, anywhere. More often than not, such dignitaries can be found ensconced in the lap of luxury known to us mere mortals (or at least non Royals) as The Back Seat. Then again, it's not every day that a prince finds himself a brand new princess to call his very own, as is the case with the newly crowned Duchess of Cambridge.

And so it's refreshing to see Prince William drive himself and his bride around London following the Royal Wedding in front of a massive swarm of onlookers. The best part, though, is that the Royal Couple chose to drive away in a perfectly appropriate Aston Martin. Not just any Aston Martin – this Seychelles Blue DB6 MKII Volante actually belongs to William's dad, Prince Charles, and was gifted to him by his mother (that'd be The Queen, naturally) in 1969 on Charles' 21st birthday.

A few details worthy of note: This droptop DB6 has been converted to run on Royal Grapes. Well, sort of. Aston Martin retrofitted this car's engine with a kit that allows it to run on alcohol fuel, which is created using grapes grown on a vineyard owned by the Royal Family. So it's green... -ish: it can only manage about eight miles per gallon. Also, take a gander at the big L on the front of the car. That stands for Learner; apparently even for Royal Learners. Also, the rear plate is a special one: JU5T WED. Clever.

And finally, are you wondering what William and Kate actually choose to drive when nobody else is looking? William reportedly owns an Audi S4, and Kate drives an Audi A3 hatchback.

DirtFish Rally School draws the ire of neighbors

Unless you suffer from the kind of neurological defect that causes you to turn into a grinning fool every time you hear an engine bounce off of its limiter, you might not be entirely happy to have a rally school set up shop next door. DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington has made a name for itself as one of the best venues in the country to learn your way around a steering wheel, but according to The Sno Valley Star, not everyone's thrilled with the institution's success.

Local residents have complained of noise from both cars and the school's PA system after DirtFish recently hosted the Global RallyCross for ESPN. The school obtained a special two-day permit from local authorities for the event.

DirtFish president Ross Bentley said that the event was within the county's noise limits, and that all operations had ceased by 6 p.m. the evening of the RallyCross. Most days, events wrap up at 5 p.m. or earlier. Legitimate problem or much ado about nothing?

Win a copy of the Corvette Bible signed by author Mike Yager

 

It's often said that you'll be happy if you find a way to do something you love. Mike Yager took that saying to heart. In 1970, at the age of 20, Yager went out and bought his first Corvette, a 1967 convertible. Four years later, Yager borrowed $500 to start up a small business selling parts manuals and accessories from the back of a car. That business, along with Yager's reputation, grew strong in the Corvette community. In 1976, Mike Yager made a life-changing move to turn this into his full-time job, and Mid America Motorworks was born.

Thirty-seven years after he borrowed those Benjamins, Yager has turned Mid America Motorworks into a company that ships over four million catalogs per year. And his collection of Corvettes has grown exponentially since he bought that '67 drop-top. Some standouts include CERV-1, XP-819 and a 1968 Le Mans Corvette that's painted Ferrari red and wears the prancing stallion on its front fenders.

It's not just Corvettes, however, as Yager also has a soft spot for old Volkswagens. He celebrates both makes at his annual Funfest events, one for VWs and one for the Corvette. The Funfest weekend has grown since the very first one took place back in 1994. In 2010, Mid America's 180+ acre Effingham, Illinois facility played host to over 17,000 cars and more than 45,000 people.

The man's knowledge of Corvettes is also freakishly extensive. Yager has applied it into a book called the Corvette Bible. In it, Yager delves into the details of every Corvette model produced since the first 300 rolled off an assembly line for the 1953 model year.

This isn't just a book for 'Vette collectors, however, because it's filled with amazing photography and a wealth of knowledge that makes an informative read for even casual Corvette fans. Now in it's second edition, the Corvette Bible covers cars right up to 2011. The first edition was good enough to earn a spot on the New York Times bestseller's list, so we think the second edition deserves a spot on your coffee table.

Motor Trend gets dirty with the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon, Porsche Panamera Turbo and BMW X6 M

True to its word, Motor Trend has released a follow-up video to its three-way drag race between the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon, the Porsche Panamera Turbo and the BMW X6 M, though this isn't exactly your run-of-the-mill comparison test. Given the quirkiness of the vehicles at hand, MT took all three vehicles out to a dry lake bed for a little fun in the sun. If you like watching high-dollar, high-horsepower cars get down and dirty, you'll want to check out the video after the jump.

It's hosted by none other than our pal Jonny Lieberman, and he's even wearing proper footwear this time around. So, which of these automotive oddities came out on top? You'll have to check out the video to see for yourself.

Buddh International Circuit gears up for inaugural Indian Grand Prix

A few years ago, India wasn't a place one would naturally associate with Formula 1 racing. Now, however, the country has its own F1 team (Force India), a couple of F1 drivers (Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok) and will soon host its first grand prix.

The race is scheduled to take place on October 30, 2011, on the new Hermann Tilke-designed Buddh International Circuit. named for the region in which it resides. The circuit was designed to be one of the fastest on the calendar, with lap times for a contemporary F1 car set to come in around 1 minute, 20 seconds, with projected speeds topping 320 km/h (just under 200 mph). With 5.14 kilometers (3.19 miles) of track and sixteen turns, the facility is being constructed as part of a $400 million project that the FIA is expected to sign off on this July.
