2011 Honda Pilot 4WD Touring

The family Crossover Utility Vehicle segment is, to put it mildly, crowded. Every major automaker has at least one option from which to choose. Ford has four choices, while Toyota makes due with three options. Some models feature two rows of seating, while others boast room for up to eight. Then there are the more off-road capable options to contrast with the docile soft-roaders.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

There's something to be said for being at the right place at the right time. Had our primordial ancestors evolved legs and lungs while the entire globe was still awash in warm sea water, they would have gone belly up and we might have never made it to the top of the food chain. At this point in history, our entire species can thank generations of ancestors for not being squished, drowned, beaten, eaten or stabbed before cranking out offspring that would further the human race. One misstep to the left could have been all it took to eradicate entire lines of Homo sapiens progress.

2011 Kia Sportage SX

There's no replacement for displacement. Ask any man or woman who dined on the muscle cars that Detroit was serving in the '50s and '60s, and they'll tell you to always order the largest engine offered if you want to have any fun. Thing is, that tired old axiom just isn't accurate in the modern era. Downsizing is what's for dinner these days.

2011 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X

There was a time when body-on-frame SUVs dominated American roads, with nearly every major automaker offering some kind of four-wheeling fighter to suburbia's off-road pretenders. Nissan was no different, and at its peak in 2000, the eminently capable Xterra sold some 88,000 copies – the same year our colleagues at Motor Trend crowned it Sport Utility of the Year.

Toyota RAV4 EV

Ahh, the joys of driving a prototype vehicle. During the annual Toyota Sustainable Mobility Seminar in San Diego, California this week, Toyota brought in a handful of all-electric RAV4 EVs for us to tool around in, but there were some caveats: The route was decidedly highway-free; when it rained one afternoon, we were told it would be better to wait to drive the cars; and one journalist had a problem with his vehicle that made it sluggish. The biggest asterisk in the whole program, though, was that the RAV4 EVs we were testing are only a pale shadow of what the real RAV4 EVs will be like when Toyota releases them in the first quarter of 2012.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Specs Suspension Rebates Top Speed Color Features Price List and Review

2012 Mercedes-Benz E350

In past generations, she was often labeled planet Earth's favorite taxi. (Or have you always preferred the Ford Crown Victoria with the shiny black leatherette?) The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, however, has long since graduated to become a premium middle-management darling in all corners of the globe.

Still, even Mercedes-Benz North America would have to admit that a mid-life and/or new model year E-Class is not generally a traffic-stopping event. This time around, however, there's more going on with Mercedes' ninth-generation contender than, say, adding a new Pipe Smoker's Package or overhead cold beverage storage-TRONIC. And while it may still not cause a road block, this mid-shelf-life version of the W212 E-Class should, at least, make everyone slow down to rubberneck a bit, because the new V6 and V8 E-Class wants to take you farther on a full tank while making more power and torque to exercise your executive privileges.
When the freshened E350 shows up this September with its M276 3.5-liter V6, it's expected to remain the lion of the line, with 80 percent of North American E-Class sales. It will continue to come in all three main bodystyles – sedan, coupe and convertible. All individual options and packages will be available for these three core Es. The E350 4Matic wagon will also remain, but it won't be alone – it'll be joined by the rear-drive E63 AMG Wagon with the latest M157 518-horsepower 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 (550-hp with AMG Performance Package) to duke it out with the supercharged 556-hp Cadillac CTS-V Wagon. (*cue the singing angels*). There will naturally also be an E63 AMG sedan coming over with the new engine underhood.

In the meantime, all E550 V8 units sold in the U.S. will be sold only as 4Matics with Sport Styling included. That means no rear-wheel-drive E550s and no Luxury Styling pack for the V8, either.

And let's not forget the E350 BlueTEC rear-wheel-drive-only sedan with its 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. This one stays as is while adopting any tweaks inside and out.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E350 side view2012 Mercedes-Benz E350 front view2012 Mercedes-Benz E350 rear view

We've just returned from Germany after driving some early examples of the E350 rear-wheel-drive sedan with Luxury styling, along with an E550 that was fully optioned with everything Sport and Premium thrown in. There were no Sport 4Matic V8s courtesy of Austria's Magna Steyr available in the Euro-spec fleet for this test, so we made do with the 154-pound-lighter (and theoretically $2,500 cheaper) rear-driver. Folks in the Sunbelt states ought to be grumpy that we are no longer meant to get this latter trim – the car is a blast.

While North America finally gets a proper Gas Direct Injection version of the V6, which certainly accounts for most of the improvement in fuel consumption, North America's sometimes higher sulfur content fuel has forced Mercedes to lose the stratified "lean burn" phase of the DI combustion cycle due to downstream catalyst and filter issues. The net-net is slightly less stellar mpg and C02 results versus the engine's European counterpart. Nevertheless, the projected fuel economy improvements over the outgoing port-injected North American V6 are still around 20 percent, which means jumping from city/highway miles per gallon figures of 17/24 to roughly 20/28 – very impressive.

It's impressive primarily because the 2012 E350 is now rated at 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 pound-feet of torque between 3,200 and 5,250 rpm – that's a 34-hp jump and a 15-lb ft leap in the midst of the much improved fuel economy and CO2 emitting. Other than the intro of direct injection to our 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6, overall friction losses between the mechanical moving parts of the engine have been reduced some 28 percent, a move that permits the use of lower viscosity fluids. There's less stress.

Mercedes' 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission meanwhile takes on the Plus moniker. What is now so "plus" with this gearbox is a new torque converter lock-up clutch with less slip, a change that translates to quicker responses, but without any nasty after-effects like added vibration. In fact, the smoothness of the modified 7G design and the reprogrammed ECU software have allowed engineers in Stuttgart to lower engine revs during the most economical running times. So, what the driver gets out of all this tech is an even quieter, smoother E-Class V6 experience, yet at the same time, a greater sense of responsiveness from the sometimes casual 7G-Tronic in the outgoing model.

Whereas the current E350 rear-drive model has been generally quoted as having a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds, we were able to feel the projected 5.9-second claim of the newly treated engine throughout the drive. It would have been a bit better, certainly, with the wider, 18-inch wheels of the full Sport trim, but at least we had the Sport version of the Airmatic suspension. The ride and noise isolation are sheer Mercedes, while the steering and handling we experienced on some nice curvy roads remain very pleasing stuff. We're still not in love with the $660 Drive Dynamic multi-contour seat option, however. When we accidentally left the auto-adjusting chairs in their most dynamic mode, we found that they still react to the slightest rights onto exit ramps as if they'd been fitted to a Porsche GT2 RS hurtling around the Carousel at the Nürburgring. It's like getting groped heavily at happy hour.

Seats aside, we liked the upgrades to the E350 so much that we cavalierly started to think a silly ol' ozone-snuffing V8 was just not necessary. Then we had our obligatory turn in the E550 Sport (dubbed E500 Avantguard in Europe). What the hell, we thought.

Sweet mother of all that is holy, this 402-hp M278 twin-turbo 4.6-liter is a barrel of well-engineered monkeys. This new direct-injected V8, first tried on U.S. roads in the CL550, replaces the naturally aspirated 382-hp 5.5-liter still being sold as you read this. Those 20 additional horses might not knock your hat in a creek, but the 52 additional lb-ft of torque (443 lb-ft @ 1,600-4,750 rpm) should. Acceleration to 60 mph now ought to take just 5.0 seconds, and we wouldn't be surprised if someone sneaks into the highest fours. This thing was a bulldog with supreme throttle response in Sport or Manual mode of the 7G-Tronic. With the full Sport setup, it almost has us thinking that the revised E63 AMG might be unnecessary, but we've made that foolish mistake before, of course.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport engine2012 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport driving2012 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport driving

To our ears, the sound from the twin exhaust ends is correctly tuned to that not-quite-AMG gray area. But, again, as with the E350, it's the throttle-play that is so satisfying – especially when combined with the more complete Sport package that includes a firmer suspension, lighter weight AMG 18-inch alloys, and the more heavily weighted feel through the AMG steering wheel. While overtaking slower traffic with the freshened E350 motor might be improved, doing the same with the twin-turbo V8 is giddy child's play.

Yet at the same time, Benz says that fuel economy and C02 emissions have been improved by an average of 17 percent over the outgoing V8. That means from the current model's city/highway rating of 15/23 mpg, we could be headed to 18/27 mpg once the EPA makes an announcement. And, unlike the need to change the GDI scheme for North America on the E350, things remain identical on the E550's engine regardless of whether it's a European or U.S. car.

Of course, there will still be other small changes before the new E-Class crosses the ocean. Our cars still won't adopt an ECO Start/Stop function – that feature will only appear on AMG models for now. We also won't get the little "BlueEFFICIENCY" tags on our front quarter panels, nor do we refer to our gas engines as BlueDIRECT. (This all-caps rigmarole is just lost on us, by the way. Are they yelling at us?).

Cabin-wise, all E-Class models now offer a more brilliant thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD onboard display with 3D graphics capabilities. The full-color high-res display measures seven inches, and among the new functions possible with Benz's new COMAND Online service is full internet access. There's a big tie-in with Google Maps, plus Google Local Search, and more features will continue trickling out as 2012 approaches. Bluetooth functions have also been augmented to allow full access to mobile address books via the onboard screen, and there is full iPod playlist connectivity and search capability.

2012 Mercedes-Benz E350 rear 3/4 view

The outgoing E350 starts out at $49,400 in RWD guise, so this newer one ought to easily crack the $50k mark. Similarly, we expect a price bump from the departing rear-drive E550 ($57,100) trim to a bit over $60k for an E550 Sport 4Matic sedan. Don't you worry, though – even if the 2012's sheetmetal doesn't shout about the changes, its worth the extra scratch.

If we didn't know any better, we'd swear the E-Class is trying to be a better S-Class.

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Specs Rebates Suspension Top Speed Color Price Features and Review

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG

No one needs a 503-horsepower SUV capable of 155 miles per hour. In the real world, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG makes no sense whatsoever. But you want one all the same. We understand.

All it took was one glance at its massive tailpipes out back for us to fall in love. The ML63 is fitted with equal parts absurdity and brilliance, and almost immediately, our minds filled with images of blasting the AMG SUV along the snowy roads of southeastern Michigan, its 6.2-liter V8 bellowing at full volume, ricocheting off the concrete overpasses looming above metro Detroit's Interstate 696.

Senior editor Damon Lavrinc appropriately described this behavior as "suburban winter assault," but as we found during our week-long winter test, the ML63 AMG is perfectly equipped for battle no matter the weather.

In all honesty, the ML is a rather ugly thing, particularly in front. Mercedes-Benz stylists haven't translated the brand's design language to their mid-size utility as smoothly as the larger GL or smaller GLK, and we'd still prefer to look at a BMW X5 – particularly the M variant, or the markedly improved new Porsche Cayenne. Adding the bulgy AMG bits gives the ML more presence on the road without being as overtly snarly as its BMW or Porsche competition, but it's more imposing than attractive.

We're partial to the five-spoke, 20-inch AMG alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli Ice & Snow 295/40-series rubber. Even more than the large wheels and wider fender flares, the giant exhaust tips look fantastic, giving the ML63 a sense of performance presence from the back end, and the sound emanating from them is pure big-bore bliss.

Overall, the M-Class design is simply growing a bit long in the tooth – a problem that will no doubt be fixed when the next-generation ML shows its face in the next year or so. We've seen plenty of spy shots of the new M out testing, and even when covered in camouflage, it's obvious that the subtle styling tweaks Mercedes has planned should do wonders for the exterior. The awkwardly shaped headlamps get a much-needed smoothing, and the taillamps grow in size, expanding onto the rear hatch. We anticipate good things, especially when the AMG team gets its hands on the refreshed 'ute.

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG side view2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG front view2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG rear view

The biggest change for the new ML63 is an expected heart transplant – the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter mill should give way in favor of the automaker's new 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Sure, the new engine is more powerful while offering improved fuel economy, but we're really going to miss the current free-breathing setup, particularly the noise it generates while swinging to the far right side of the tach.

In the current ML63, the 6.2-liter V8 pumps out 503 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque – plenty of push. To compare, the BMW X5 M's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is good for 555 hp and 500 lb-ft of twist, and the dearer Porsche Cayenne Turbo offers 500 hp and 516 lb-ft. This whole segment of overly powerful SUVs is awesomely absurd, and as much of a honey as the current AMG unit is, the new powerplant ought to make the ML63 more competitive with its insane contemporaries.

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG engine

The ML63 AMG doesn't do slow, and that's immediately noticeable off the line. Mercedes-Benz states that its 5,093-pound, all-wheel-drive utility vehicle will run to 60 miles per hour in just 4.8 seconds – one-tenth of a second quicker than a Porsche Cayman S. The AMG Speedshift seven-speed transmission is a perfect match for the naturally aspirated V8, firing off shifts with genuine quickness, with the paddle-shifters providing a level of haptic feedback better than most flappy paddles on the market. On many occasions, we found ourselves manually clicking down through the gears while decelerating to a stop, letting the revs peak close to the 7,250-rpm redline. The engine's sound is just that good, fuel economy be damned.

Speaking of fuel economy, the ML63's numbers are, as you'd expect, absolutely horrific. If you're on your best behavior, the AMG crossover will return 15 miles per gallon on the highway, 11 in the city. Us? We frequently saw single-digit mileage numbers. Adding up our data resulted in a 12.3-mpg as-tested figure. No matter. Nobody looking in this segment is remotely worried about efficiency and any concern for fuel economy is obliterated the moment you open the AMG brochure.

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG shifter2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG gauges

The combination of our tester's Pirelli winter shoes and 4Matic all-wheel drive resulted in a people mover that was perfectly suited for winter driving fun. The back end easily kicked out during turns at intersections, even under light throttle, but the traction control obediently pulled things back in line, and we never had an issue controlling the ML63 – even in thick patches of snow and ice. If you get this thing in the deep snow, be firm on the throttle and in nearly every circumstance, you'll have no problem powering through the slushy stuff.

There's a strong tendency for all four wheels to spin upon takeoff in the snow and ice, but the ML63 never feels unwieldy in low-traction conditions. We never once felt like we had too much power, or that the throttle was too sensitive for winter commuting. And while the AMG is best suited for driving quickly, it's extremely capable in the snow. We'd definitely prefer something with more ground clearance like a Jeep Grand Cherokee if we had to deal with larger accumulations of snow and ice, but for the occasional blizzard, the ML63 is both comfortable and capable while still willing to partake in a bit of hooliganism when provoked.

2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG headlight2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG wheel2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG taillight2011 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG rear bumper

On dry pavement, the AMG is simply a hoot. Its Airmatic-based AMG sport suspension uses adaptive damping to control ride comfort over a variety of road surfaces, and body roll is damn near nonexistent – a good thing, considering that the ML is a top-heavy SUV. However, we wish the steering were more dialed-in to suit the 'ute's performance proclivities, and while we're glad Mercedes has fitted the ML63 with a thicker, smaller-diameter steering wheel, we'd gladly welcome some more feedback at turn-in. Overall levels of steering feedback aren't bad while turning, but it isn't nearly as precise as the X5 M's setup.

From behind the wheel, we can't help but notice how the ML's interior – much like the exterior design – looks a bit out-of-date. The instrument panel still looks fresh, and we like the aluminum trim and AMG-specific gauges, but things like the center stack are dearly in need of an update. It's odd to say, but with Mercedes-Benz's COMAND system on hand, we prefer the large knob on the center console to control all of the functions rather than the hard buttons below the screen. COMMAND is far from our favorite modern-day infotainment systems, though it's still less finicky than what you'll find elsewhere in the luxury set.

The rest of the center stack is easy to operate, with two large dials controlling interior temperature with clearly labeled buttons in the middle to direct things like fan speed, heated/cooled seats and suspension settings. We're eager to see how Mercedes-Benz incorporates its newest interior refinements into the ML – something along the lines of what we find in the E-Class would surely do the trick.

Overall comfort is still top-notch, and we have to tip our hat to the AMG sport seats fitted in the ML63. The perforated leather chairs are immensely comfortable, and with power adjustment for lumbar and side bolstering, it's easy to get a seat right where you want it. We took the ML63 for a couple of long drives through the winter sludge with no complaints to speak of. Visibility from all angles is good, and the cabin remains quiet even at higher speeds. Not too quiet, though – we had no problem hearing the growl of the V8 during instances of hard throttle.

While there's no lack of awesomeness to the ML63 AMG package, we simply can't fathom the idea of shelling out our hard-earned cash for one. In the real world, go-fast SUVs like this, the BMW X5 M or Porsche Cayenne Turbo don't make any real sense. And while we wouldn't shake our heads at anyone who buys one, we know that our coin – $94,125 as tested – can be stretched a lot further. Spend $60,000 on a C63 AMG for the dry season and use the remaining $34K to get yourself a fully loaded Subaru WRX hatchback for winter (with change to spare!). But if you do insist on going for pure absurdity, just get Merc's own G55 AMG and call it a day. That'll rock your world, but the ML63 should still do nicely.
